Discover Thai culture through eating!

Our fun and insightful morning walks through Chiang Mai's old town will reveal to you the pick of local restaurants – and what's best to eat there – a colourful, pungent covered market – and how the ingredients there are used – as well as some wicked dessert stalls.

Along the way, you'll discover that there's so much more to Thai food than pat thai and green curry: toothsome salads of aubergine, jackfruit and tamarind leaves with pork crackling; delicious red noodle soup with morning glory and fishballs; handmade northern sausages; pumpkins stuffed and baked with egg custard.

  • Enjoy some fascinating insights into Chiang Mai, its history and culture as you walk
  • Breakfast on tasty Vietnamese baguettes and kopii , traditional Thai coffee
  • Nose around Talat Pratu Chiang Mai, the city's most authentic food market – everything from fragrant herbs to fermented soy-bean paste, the staple ingredient of northern cuisine
  • Tuck into Chiang Mai's best khao niaw mamuang, mango with sticky rice and coconut cream
  • Stroll along the old town's most famous street of lunch and dessert stalls
  • Sample the many delights of Huen Phen, probably the best restaurant in town for northern Thai food

Available every day of the week, the guided food walk is offered as a private tour, costing B700 per person (children B350). On top of this, we'll leave you to pay for your food, according to exactly what and how much you want to eat – even if you're really enjoying your eats, it shouldn't come to more than B200 per person! The tour begins and ends at Elliebum, heading off ideally at 9 or 9.30am (to catch the morning market) and lasting around 4 hours.

We can tailor the guided food walk to suit vegetarians. We can arrange private food tours at other times of day, too. We also give small, informal and tailor-made Thai cooking classes.
